Wife of the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has been allowed to return from exile to her Baida home in eastern Libya as part of a new national reconciliation program, the Telegraph reports.
Safia Farkash Gaddafi, who had openly defended her husband until his demise was granted permission two weeks ago.
Libyan authorities are embarking on this move to appease pro-Gaddafi tribes prior to their planned battle to retake the Islamic State-held city of Sirte, also the hometown of Colonel Gaddafi.
Sirte was captured by Isil last year after resentful ex-Gaddafi loyalists formed a coalition with foreign jihadists.
Safia, 63, married the former Libyan leader in 1970 and had six children with him. She, however, fled to neighbouring Algeria in August 2011 as Tripoli fell to anti-Gaddafi rebels.
Safia and her daughter Aisha together with a number of other senior regime figures, sought asylum first in Algiers and later moved to the Gulf state of Oman.
The decision to allow Safia back along with a number of her grandchildren was endorsed by council officials in Baida around a fortnight ago, according to a number of reports in Libyan media.
