Argentina’s president Mauricio Macri is confident that Lionel Messi will play for the national team again.

In the aftermath of Argentina’s defeat to Chile in the Copa America final, Messi, who missed a penalty in the shootout, announced that he would quit playing for the national side.

Fans and former players, including Diego Maradona, have pleaded with the Barcelona forward to reverse his decision, and Macri believes that the 29-year-old will represent the country again following a telephone conversation.

"I talked to him on the phone; I'm sure he will come back," Macri told CNBC.

"He's the best in the world."
