Led Zeppelin copyright trial due to begin in Los Angeles

LED STAIRWAY

Starting later today, a court in Los Angeles will decide whether Led Zeppelin ripped off the acoustic guitar riff on Stairway to Heaven from the band Spirit.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant have been named as defendants in the legal action brought by the trustee of the late guitarist Randy Wolfe.

He claims Stairway, which was released in 1971, copies the Spirit song Taurus, which Wolfe wrote in the mid-60s. The bands toured together on the festival circuit around that time.

Page, Plant, and bandmate John Paul Jones are all expected to testify at the trial.

The trial comes after the high-profile victory of Marvin Gaye's family over Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams' track Blurred Lines.

A judge awarded the late soul singer's family $7.4m (£5.24m).

Music historian Clinton Heylin has been speaking to the Today programme about the new case
