A last-minute Kanye West gig in New York has been cancelled after thousands of fans descended on the venue.More than 4,000 people turned up at the 1,500-capacity Webster Hall for the pop-up show.

Fans climbed on top of cars, dustbins and scaffolding and hung out of windows hoping to get a better view.

Kanye hinted on social media that he was going to do the impromptu gig after the Governor's Ball was cancelled on Sunday because of severe weather.

The rapper had been scheduled to perform on the third and final day of the festival on Randall's Island but it was called off over fears of possible lightning strikes.

Kanye West's secret show had been due to start at 2am (7am UK time) and according to his Twitter page was sold out by 1am.

Shortly before 2am, Webster Hall tweeted that there'd be no gig.

Kanye West was then filmed driving around New York's East Village with Kim Kardashian before leaving down Third Avenue.

The bad weather on America's east coast also led to the cancellation of the festival stage at the Hot 97 Summer Jam in New Jersey.

Main stage performances at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford went ahead as planned, though.

Kanye West put in a surprise appearance at the Summer Jam on Sunday before announcing his pop-up gig.

BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ Charlie Sloth was the side of the stage during his appearance with his GOOD Music labelmates.

He also celebrated his birthday backstage with Kim Kardashian, who got him a cake.
