Empire: We are the ‘Cosbys’ from the hood – Cookie and Lucious Lyon

Following the huge success chalked by Fox’s Empire television series, many have tagged it as the continuation of the late 1980s and early 1990s family show, The Cosby Show. Both shows are themed around a successful black family and in the case of The Cosby Show, it was used to project a positive image of blacks in America.

The Empire series stars, Taraji P. Henson (Cookie Lyon) and Terrence Howard (Lucious Lyon) have likened the world acclaimed show to the famous The Cosby Show.

The two, who are parents in the series and owners of a famous record label, Empire Entertainment, told Myjoyonline.com in an exclusive interview that their show is likened to The Cosby Show because of the family theme.

Taraji said, “It is the show about family. We might be the Cosby from the hood. We were fortunate enough to go to college…we got the hood college education.

But I guess they are equating to the family aspect of the show.”
Terrence added that “The fact that a lot of black people are tuning in and a lot of white people are tuning in because you never really had many individual separate cultures that tune into a black dominated show…”

According to Taraji, no show “has done it since The Cosby” and that is why people are comparing it to The Cosby Show.

The Empire series, which airs on Fox on DStv, tells the story of hip-hop artiste and CEO of Empire Entertainment, Lucious Lyon, who has always ruled unchallenged.

A medical diagnosis predicts he will be incapacitated for three years, which prompts the sharks to circle. Without further damaging his family, he must decide which of his three sons will take over.

His favourite, young Hakeem (played by Bryshere Y. Gray), is a gifted musician but values fame over hard work. Middle son, Jamal (played by Jussie Smollett), is talented, shy but gay, which is embarrassing to Lyon.

The oldest, Andre (played by Trai Byers), is business-minded but lacks charisma. The reappearance of Cookie, his ex-wife, complicates things; she says he owes her for taking the fall for the drug-running that financed his early career.
