Sudan wants UN force out of Darfur

UN Peacekeepers Troops

Sudan wants the UN-backed force in Darfur to leave when its mandate expires in June, on the grounds that rebel activity had receded and civilians are no longer under threat, Foreign Minister Kamal Ismail has said, Reuters news agency reports.

The joint African Union-United Nations force, known as Unamid, has been in Darfur since 2007 to curb violence between government forces and rebels.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has an arrest warrant out for Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir, accusing him of genocide in Darfur. He has has denied the charges.

South Africa has already announced that it will be withdrawing its troops in Unamid over the next few months.
