Kesha received a standing ovation at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards for her powerful cover of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe.” The performance ended a week of turmoil for Kesha, who last week was barred from appearing during the telecast by Dr. Luke and Kemosabe Records before the label rescinded.
Kesha had been set to perform during the Billboard Music Awards, but Dick Clark Productions announced on Tuesday that Kesha’s label, Kemosabe Records, “rescinded its approval” of her performance.
“I just wanted to sing a song I love to honor an artist I have always looked up to,” Kesha wrote on Facebook after the announcement.
On Thursday, Kemosabe Records clarified that “approval was only suspended when Kemosabe learned Kesha was to use the performance as a platform to discuss the litigation” between Kesha and Dr. Luke.
“Now that Kemosabe has obtained assurances, that it is relying upon, from Kesha, her representatives and Dick Clark Productions that neither Kesha nor her supporters will use the performance as such a platform, the approval has been restored,” the label said in a statement.
Kesha did not make any reference to Dr. Luke during the performance. She has previously accused the producer of sexual assault and abuse, claims Dr. Luke has denied in court and on social media.
In April, a New York State Supreme Court judge dismissed Kesha’s counterclaims against Dr. Luke and rejected her request to be let out of her contract with Kemosabe and Sony.
