More than 152 protesters have been imprisoned in Egypt for a recent demonstrations against President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s decision to transfer two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia.
Many of the protesters were sentenced to five years imprisonment.
In the country, protesting without a police permit carries jail time and since Al-sisi became president, restrictions on protests have been tightened.
Earlier this month President el-Sisi announced that no one will be above the law in Egypt, even presidential staff. This statement has won the admiration of many of his opposition.
But according to protesters, police have also been inconsistent in their approach to the arrests.
