The 14-seater bus was said to have crashed after the unidentified driver slept off while driving on the highway.
The State’s Tollgate Unit Commander, Mr. Adewale Ameen, who confirmed the accident, said ‘the driver of the bus dozed off while behind the steering.’
“The vehicle was enroute Lagos from Asaba, Delta state on Wednesday.
“It was a smooth trip until they got close to Bypass in Benin and the driver started waving the steering randomly from left to right. At first, they thought he was trying to navigate the potholes on the road but it was pretty obvious that the road at that point was good and there was no need for that.
“Suddenly, the driver began to move to the right almost out of the road, the man at the front noticed that the driver was sleeping, so he quickly reached out his hand for the steering trying to wave back into the road. He was not very successful because his seat belt held him back but he managed to wave it a little.
“At that point, the bus hit the bump by the right and fell over.
“No life was lost in the accident but various degrees of injuries were sustained by the passenger,” the Commander noted.
Meanwhile, the driver has apologized to his passengers, stating that he worked the previous night.
He said he drove from Lagos to Asaba and was forced to take another trip without any good sleep.
