Nigerian student missing for over one year found dead in Coventry

Ozi Akerele, aged 24, of Richmond Street, Stoke, Coventry, is missing. He's a Nigerian student who has only been in the city for a few weeks.

A 24-year-old Nigerian man, Ozi Akerele, a student of Coventry University, England has been found dead.
Akerele of Richmond Street, Stoke, reportedly went missing for over a year before his body was discovered on Thursday last week, Coventrytelegraph.net is reporting.

The West Midlands Police yesterday disclosed that the body was found by young boys playing football at about 5pm on the day the body was found.
The boys had kicked a football into a disused Coventry churchyard, off Albert Fearns Garden, in Foleshill, and climbed over a fence to retrieve it when they found the body and alerted the police.
Police say although formal identification is yet to take place, they believe it to ‘be that of the 24-year-old Nigerian who had been missing since a night out with friends on January 31, 2015.’
The police also noted that Akerele’s family have been informed and are being supported by officers.

“A post mortem examination carried out was inconclusive and further tests will be carried out to establish the cause of death, although detectives do not believe it to be suspicious.
“It’s believed that Akerele took a wrong turn on his walk home after a night out.
“He was last seen in Old Church Road at 7.50am when he tried to flag down a motorist for help.
“His last movements were caught on CCTV,” the police further noted.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the mother of one of the boys who found the deceased, said: “My son and his friend were playing football and the ball went over the fence in to the churchyard.
“His friend jumped over the fence and saw something, so he shouted my lad who also went over the fence and saw it also.
“They went to get the other boy’s mother who wasn’t sure what it was and thought it may have been a Halloween outfit or something like that.
“They got another adult who said it was definitely a body and the police were called. My boy was really upset and both boys have been really quiet.
“The police were really lovely with both of them and I tried to explain to my lad that hopefully the person’s family can now have some closure.”
