Tragedy struck in the Magodo area of Lagos State on Saturday morning when a collapsed building snuffed life out of four siblings.
Eyewitnesses say the building, a bungalow which is located at Orisha Street, Isheri, Magodo caved in due to heavy rainfall in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Unfortunately, the victims; Sylva Odiah, 24; Sayo Odiah,15; Clinton Odiah, 11 and eight year-old Endurance Odiah, are of the same parents.
The mother of the four victims reportedly collapsed on hearing the sad news and was rushed to Tabasco hospital in the area.
“Another building also collapsed again but I don’t know if anyone was killed. Government needs to do something in this area. It is sandy and water logged. I think the incident is not unconnected with the heavy rain and the topography in the area,” a resident of the area said.
The situation is currently being managed by emergency personnel comprising the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Nigerian police.
NEMA’s spokesman for the southwest, Ibrahim Farinloye who confirmed the incident said the collapse was caused by mudslides from the cleavage of a hill beside River Ogun.

Another resident gave his account of the building collapse: “Around 6am, we heard a loud sound. But we did not know that the upper part of another building beside the bungalow had fallen on it.
“Unfortunately, it fell just on the room where Mr. Godwin Odiah’s children were sleeping. The man has seven children but three of them are not around. He was the one who saw it and started screaming for help. He said he was in the bathroom when he heard the sound but did not know that it was in his compound”.
The incident is coming on the heels of a worrisome series of collapsed buildings in different parts of Lagos in recent times.
