Many Nigerian celebrities didn’t turnout for the event which started behind schedule.
As it has become peculiar with almost every event held in Nigeria, the 2016 Nigerian Entertainment Awards in New York had an ‘African time’ delay.
The annual award ceremony’s 11th edition, which was scheduled to start at 11pm (Nigerian time) didn’t begin until a few minutes before 3am.
Unlike last year’s event that had top entertainment personalities in attendance, several acts like Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Lil Kesh, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Falz and many more who bagged nominations in various categories didn’t turn up for the award ceremony.
While many celebrities went to their social media pages to solicit for votes from their fans when the nominations were announced, very little mention was made about being at the event on the day as the venue was left almost empty.
YBNL singer Adekunle Gold who won the award for ‘Best New Act’ and Niniola were among the few celebs in attendance.
The event held just a day after Saturday’s successful Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless concert, headlined by 2face Idibia and M.I Abaga, which had several entertainment personalities in attendance.
This further raises previously held questions about why an award ceremony for Nigerian entertainers needs to hold in the United States.
Perhaps, the skyrocketing exchange rate could have been a reason for the absence, or maybe they just don’t regard the award ceremony important enough for their time and presence.
