The Itsoseng regional court in North West has sentenced a 36-year-old man convicted of raping two minors to life imprisonment.Alfred Novolo from Bethel near Itsoseng repeatedly raped two 15-year-olds while they were sleeping at their home in 2008.
Delivering her sentence‚ magistrate Abigail Juries said rape of children was particularly gross and that people who rape young children must get a harsher sentence.
“There is no doubt in my mind that the two minors will live with scars and trauma for the rest of their lives. You repeatedly raped them in the presence of each other and also threatened them with a knife‚” she said.
Juries said she was taking into account the seriousness of the crime. “No court can take away the trauma that these children went through. Everyone had to see them both naked while they were trying to escape using the window and the door‚” she said.
“Children and women of Itsoseng are not safe every day in this court we have over four of the cases in rapes. That is why I came to the conclusion that the two counts of rape will be given as a sentence of one‚ the appropriate sentence is life imprisonment.
She said Novolo's name would be entered in the register for offenders of children‚ meaning that he would be unsuitable to work with children. “You will be seen as unfit to work with the children. Your name will also be entered into the national register of sex offenders‚” she said.
